Charlie Hughes had given Leeds a 1-0 lead in the first half and Captain Tom Burden added a second after forty-nine minutes. No sooner had Leeds got their second than Limerick scored through Kelly and went on to win the game with O'Grady getting two more in the seventieth and eighty-fifth minutes. Leeds had a chance to draw level soon afterwards but O'Dwyer saved Jim Milburn's spot kick.

Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report)

"A penalty saved in the last five minutes by O'Dwyer, the Limerick goalkeeper and taken by Milburn, helped Limerick to a 3-2 win over Leeds United at Limerick yesterday."

"Excellent goalkeeping by O'Dwyer kept Leeds forwards in check and in the first half only Hughes penetrated. Four minutes afterthe resumption, Burden, the visiting captain, put Leeds further ahead. This, however, only proved a tonic to the home team and almost immediately afterwards Kelly had a goal. In the twenty-fifth minute (of the second half) O'Grady equalised, and five minutes from the end the same player secured victory for the home side."

Match Report: From the Limerick Leader

"Leeds, who were at full strength with the exception of international John Charles, got the shock of their lives at the hands of Limerick, yesterday at the Markets Field. It was evident that Limerick had shaken off last Sunday's lethargy and in the second half set about reducing a 2-0 deficit with grim determination. Jimmy Kelly (Pike Rovers), leading the Limerick attack with great gusto, shot the local's first goal off an uncanny free by Casey. Kelly brought the house down when he nipped in between goalie Searson and Milburn to centre the ball across the goal to leave Buddy O'Grady through for the second goal. It was five minutes from time when O'Grady hit the winning shot, as if from a rocket into the Leeds net. Leeds got a chance of squaring the match when Milburn's penalty was well saved by O'Dwyer. The match showed that Limerick had three useful recruits in Byrnes, Kelly and Allen, and at the same time the Leeds officials must surely realise that there is an abundance of soccer talent in Limerick."
